The Job Search Rules: Network, Network, Network

December 28th, 2008

Many people are putting off their job search until after the economy gets better. This is a huge mistake, as there are currently companies growing and expanding. It may take more effort to find them, but they are out there. During this unsettling economy, there are still multiple opportunities to network through organizations like your local Chamber of Commerce. This is a great way to find out who is hiring and growing. This is also a great time to connect and re-connect with people. Why wait until people are ready to hire to get to know them? It seems more prudent to be someone they know and might reach out to before starting their search for candidates. Who has a better chance of landing the job – the person who has been in touch, networking and establishing rapport or the person who makes their first contact via email in response to a job advertisement?

It’s frustrating out there, but it’s going to get better; it always does. Don’t see this as a time to rest. It’s a time to build on that momentum you have worked to build or start building now. If you are looking to make a career move, there is no better time to get a leg up on the competition.
